Wire Calculators & Gauge Tools

Professional wire calculation tools wire weight, ring weight, SWG ? AWG ? mm conversion and reference tables. Built for buyers, engineers and makers.

Calculate the weight of a wire coil or straight length. Useful for estimating material cost, freight weight and stock requirements.

HOW IT WORKS

Weight = p  (d/2)  Length  Density

Where d = diameter in cm, Length in cm, Density in g/cm. Result in grams, converted to kg.

MATERIAL DENSITIES
Copper (ETP)8.89 g/cm
Aluminium (EC)2.70 g/cm
GI / Mild Steel7.85 g/cm
SS 3047.93 g/cm
SS 3167.99 g/cm

FORMULA USED

Wire circumference per ring = p (Inner Diameter + Wire Diameter)
Volume per ring = p (Wire Diameter / 2) Wire Circumference
Weight per ring = Volume Density

Note: This is the mean-diameter formula (standard for jump ring calculations). Actual weight may vary 2% due to cut waste and material tolerances.

ASPECT RATIO

AR = Inner Diameter Wire Diameter. Typical chainmaille AR: 3.56.0. Industrial rings: 315.

ABOUT WIRE GAUGE SYSTEMS
SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) British/Indian standard. Higher number = thinner wire. SWG 0 = 8.23mm; SWG 36 = 0.20mm.
AWG (American Wire Gauge) US standard. Higher number = thinner wire. AWG 0 = 8.25mm; AWG 36 = 0.127mm.
Metric (mm) Diameter in millimetres. Used in IS, IEC and most modern European standards.

Wire Specification Reference Guide

Everything buyers, engineers and makers need to specify wire correctly the first time.

??
Why Gauge Systems Differ

SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) is the system used in India and the UK IS and BS standards reference SWG numbers. AWG is the American standard used in ASTM, UL and NEC specifications. When sourcing wire internationally or reading foreign datasheets, always confirm which gauge system applies before ordering.

??
Estimating Wire Weight for Orders

Accurate weight estimation is essential for freight planning, cost estimation and inventory management. Use our Wire Weight Calculator to determine coil weight before requesting a quote we can then confirm pricing per kg or per coil for your specific gauge and material.

??
Ring Aspect Ratio Explained

Aspect Ratio (AR) = Inner Diameter Wire Diameter. For chainmaille, AR determines which weaves are achievable. Box chain: AR ~3.03.5. Full Persian: AR ~3.74.2. For industrial filter rings, higher AR gives larger flow aperture per ring. Our ring calculator outputs AR automatically.
